- BMA Report on Healthcare In A Rural Setting

The British Medical Association (BMA) resolved at its 2003 meeting to further investigate the difficulties in recruiting and retaining doctors in rural practice. In particular, the BMA is concerned about the sustainability of services in rural areas and the resulting problems with access to healthcare. The Board of Science decided to build on the earlier GPC/IRH report and widen the discussion on rural healthcare in the UK.

Description: A report from the Health Strategies Consultancy examines four
different financial incentive models to help health care providers implement
information technology for improved care and patient safety. The "payment
differential" model includes bonuses or add-on payments to providers and
delivery systems for adopting IT or improving quality with technology. Under
"cost differential" programs, employers or payers offer patients reduced
copayments or deductibles for visits to providers who meet quality measures,
such as achieving certain outcomes with IT. "Direct reimbursement" offers
payments to providers for new types of care, such as online consultations
between patients and providers. Another program, "shared withholds," withholds an amount of reimbursement or delays rate increases until a provider meets IT implementation targets or quality goals through the use of technology. Adobe PDF
